After graduating M.Sc. (Hons) in Informatics in 1991, I joined the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences working on the introducing digitisation of cultural heritage in Bulgaria. I earned my PhD degree in Informatics (1999) with a pioneering Digital Humanities research forEastern Europe which explored the orthographic variety of Mediaeval Slavonic Manuscripts. I served as the founding head of the first Digitisation Centre in Bulgaria (2004) which collaborated with the National Library Ivan Vazov, State Archives and other memory institutions. In 2008¾2011 I worked in the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow where I had principal investigator roles in research and development projects funded by the European Commission, JISC, the European Digital Library Foundation, and the Scottish Funding Council. In 2012¾2017 I was a resident Associate Professor in the Media and Knowledge Science Faculty of the University of Malta where I spearheaded an update and expansion of the portfolio of programmes in library, information, and archival science (LIAS). In addition, I brought the first EC-funded project to LIAS, Civic Epistemologies, which developed a roadmap for citizen science in digital heritage.
In August 2017 I joined UCL Qatar whereI led in the introduction of four pathways within the MA programme. I am currently one of the global enablers in the domain of innovation labs in libraries and hosted in September 2019 a booksprint which produced the first guidebook in this domain. I coordinate a seed grant on Research Data Management in Digital Humanities and also secured a QNRF grant exploring the transmission of narratives on falconry in Qatar and their preservation.
I regularly evaluate for the European Commission programmes in the area of e-Infrastructures and digital humanities. I am a member of the editorial board of the IFLA Library Journal, served as a national representative for Malta in DARIAH, the European eInfrastructure for Digital Humanities, and served as an ambassador of the European Data Science Academy (EDSA). I am also on the Steering committees of all three major international series of conferences in digital libraries, ICDL, TPDL and ICADL.
