One of the placement visits of UCL Qatar students to the British Library earlier this year grew into a project which joins the forces of UCL Qatar, the British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership Project, and Qatar National Library in exploring the landscape of audiovisual collections in Qatar and other countries in the Middle East.

Within this joint project, we are organising an event to celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. This year the theme of the World Day is “Engage the Past Through Sound and Images”. The event for Qatar will explore the challenges of preserving Arab audiovisual heritage. The World Day is celebrated today, on the 27 October (this is the date of publication of the blog post). Our event will follow in a few days on 3 November 2019. This year it is one of some 70 events organised around the world!

The event will start with a lecture: “The Gulf and the Arab Audiovisual Heritage: The Urgency and the Possibilities of Preservation,” by Hazem Jamjoum  (The British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership Project) followed by a panel discussion: “Preserving Our Audiovisual Heritage: Challenges and Opportunities”, with the participation of Shayya Al FadelAbdul Salam Jadallah and Pamela Erskine-Loftus.

Registration is not required. The event will be held in Arabic and English, and translation will be provided. Join us on 3 November 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM in Qatar National Library.

Shortly about the guest speaker: Hazem Jamjoum joined the British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership Project in April 2019 as Gulf Audio Curator and Cataloguer. You can read about some of his work on the Digital Scholarship blog
